An augmented file manager
Skwir is a fast file manager for humans and agents, with a built-in preview for documents, photos, videos, music, archives and more. Coming next: local AI to keep your files organised.
It’s live: click a file, switch views, or right-click for more. Sample files only.
Features
Everything in one window
-
Previews for almost anything
Documents, photos, video, music, ebooks, 3D models, even the files inside a zip, right beside the list.
-
Seven ways to see a folder
A list, a tree, a grid, columns, a board, a map of your photos, and what fills your disk, folder within folder.
-
Searches you can keep
Search by name, kind, date, tag or the words inside, then keep the search in the sidebar.
-
Tags that travel with the file
Tag, rate and comment on any file, kept where Dolphin, darktable and Lightroom read them too.
-
Tidy up, with undo
Rename a whole selection, edit a folder as text, gather files on the Shelf, and take changes back.
-
Copies you can trust
Pause a long copy, see what a USB drive has really written, and be asked first when there isn’t room.
Principles
Light, private, and free
Light and fast
Written in Rust and drawn on the graphics card, Skwir stays responsive in folders with 100,000 files, and every change is measured to keep it that way.
How it stays lightPrivate by design
No tracking, no telemetry: nothing leaves your computer unless you ask. AI stays optional, with models that run on your own computer first.
What stays privateFree and open source
Skwir is free software under the Apache 2.0 licence, written in Rust. Read the code, report a bug, or help build it.
The sourceUnderneath Skwir
Let your agent drive.
Under its windows and menus, Skwir is a list of named commands, and the keyboard, the menus and the command palette
all call them. Scripts and AI agents use the same ones, through skwir cmd and skwir mcp, and
what they would change comes to you as a plan.
- 140+ named commands
- JSON Schema for every argument
- Plans reviewed, then undoable
- CLI and MCP off until you turn them on
Click the window to take the controls.
A script drives this window through the same commands the app runs. Click it to take over. Sample files only.
One surface
Keys, menus and agents speak the same language
Every action is a command first and a button second: a name and JSON arguments, checked against a schema before anything runs, whoever sent them. Plugins add their own, and switching a plugin off withdraws them.

Changes are plans
An agent proposes. You decide.
Proposals, not actions
What an agent would change waits in the window as a plan, checked step by step against the disk. Nothing runs until you apply it.
Undo for every step
An applied plan joins your undo history like your own changes, each step with its inverse.
Your Allow for the rest
A setting to change, a program to start or an undo waits for your Allow. An agent can never apply its own plan or press a button for you.
Private stays private
An agent never sees the names or contents of folders you mark private. ~/.ssh and ~/.gnupg are private from the start.
Try it in three steps
Switch it on
Settings › Plugins › Agents and scripts. It is off by default: once on, any program running as you can reach the open window, as it can your files.
Script it
Run any command and read its answer as JSON.
$ skwir cmd entriesGive it to an agent
Add the MCP server to your agent, here Claude Code. Its proposals wait in the window for you.
$ claude mcp add skwir -- skwir mcp
The details, from the command line to what an agent may do and which folders stay private, are in the docs. Reading this as an agent? They come without the page too.
